iLRN 2020: 6th International Conference of the Immersive Learning Research Networt's 4 day conference attracted speakers and audience members from around the world. iLRN is a non-profit organization representing international researchers in immersive and spatial technologies.
The event was held in VirBELA and AltspaceVR and themed “Vision 20/20: Hindsight, Insight, and Foresight in XR and Immersive Learning." It was technically co-sponsored by the IEEE Education Society, with proceedings to be submitted for inclusion in IEEE Xplore®. The event was co-produced by Educators in VR.
iLRN 2020 was an innovative and interactive virtual gathering for a burgeoning global network of researchers and practitioners collaborating to develop the scientific, technical, and applied potential of immersive learning. Considered a premier scholarly event focusing on advances in the use of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), and other extended reality (XR) technologies to support learners, the conference brought out some of the leaders in these technologies, education, and the companies that support them.
Dr. Jonathan Richter is founding chair of the Applied Research in Immersive Environments for Learning (ARiEL) Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and founding CEO and current President of the Immersive Learning Research Network (iLRN). A curriculum designer, teacher, futurist, and educator, Jon lives in Missoula, Montana with his wife Suzanne, daughter Sophia, and son Griffin and works at Salish Kootenai College on the Flathead Indian Reservation.
Mark J. W. Lee is an internationally recognized educational technologist and learning scientist who is especially well known for his scholarly contributions to, and thought leadership in, the use of XR and immersive technologies for supporting learning. He is an adjunct senior lecturer with the School of Education at Charles Sturt University, Australia, and faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center, and where he continues to run his consultancy, Engineered for Learning, LLC. Mark serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Research Officer of the Immersive Learning Research Network (iLRN) and was the General Chair of the iLRN 2020 Virtual Conference. In addition, he is President of the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance, and Instruction; Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies (2019 JCR Impact Factor: 2.714); and sits on the IEEE Education Society’s Board of Governors. In 2016, Mark was named a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society for his distinguished contributions to ICT education and the use of ICT for education.
Dennis Beck is an Associate Professor of Educational Technology at the University of Arkansas. He enjoys teaching courses in instructional design, integrating technology into the curriculum, and educational technology research. He also has a wealth of experience in the design of online and blended courses in K-12, higher education, and corporate training environments. He has helped lead the Immersive Learning Research Network, an international collaboration of scholars and practitioners who are committed to learning more about how to use immersive technologies in education.
Heather is a compassionate & enthusiastic research design advocate with experience at innovative remote institutions. She is a published writer on design, research, and engagement in XR technologies and an experienced virtual team leader, including virtual conference hosting. Heather was the Practitioner Stream Co-Chair for iLRN 2020, served on the Organizing Committee, and contributed to many of the decisions relating to user experience (UX) and VR production design.
